Introduction to film industry

The processes from idea to cinema exhibtion are of the following:
  • production
  • distribution
  • exhibition(cinema)
  • exhitbition(non-cinema)
In production there are three different processes pre-production, production and post production. In pre-production it includes the planning creating the script and producing storyboards which illutrates the type of sots made and what the setting of the scene would look like. In the actually production it involves the shooting and recording of the film. And the post production is the editing and creating the final copy of the film.

The distribution is the process that is gone through after the post production do this would be delivering the film to the audience through film prints which is a way of advertising the film to the audience. The distribution also includes making DVDs avaliable to the audience.

Analysis of how sound helps construct the representation of disability in the clip of "Secret diary of the call girl"

At the beginning of the clip the first piece of sound we hear is the end of a sound bridge and it has continued into the start of this clip. From the start clip there is no non-diegetic sound used the on sound is the dialogue. When  the father is getting the envelope out of the bag the sound has been enhanced to emphasize the fact that this is and exchange of business. They have done this so the audience are more aware of the situation. Also the area where they have enhanced the sound is when the cool girl locks the door, they have done this to emphasize how the boy is feeling and show how vulnerable he feels when she tries locking the door. To show the awkwardness the dialogue is short and the father leaves his sentences unfinished. The dialogue is punctuated by awkward silences as it draws attention to the purpose of him being there and this indirectly infers his disability. Instead of the disability being a negative thing they treat his disability part of the narrative so the audience don't have pity on the boy.

When the father is in the car there is soundtrack used is diegetic and it creates anxiety as the music that was played did not reflect how he was feeling. Also when he was in the car there was sound effects used when the windows were going up and down, when the chair was going backwards and forwards and the horn of the car. All these sound effects shows his nervousness. Towards the end there was a sound bridge of non-diegetic when the scene cross cuts back into the bedroom. The non-diegetic soundtrack is slow and mellow and the instrument uses in this soundtrack is a harmonica and this instrument is used in blues. This soundtrack is showing a reflection of how the boy is feeling and it also helps create the mood of the atmosphere. Towards the end of the sound bridge the volume gradually increases and the sound track is taking over the ambience sound. All the soundtrack, dialogue, sound bridges and sound effect all create a emphases of how the characters are feeling in the situation and the sound helps draw more attention to the disability.

Analysis of how editing helps construct the representaion of disability in the clip of "Secret diary of the call girl"

The type of editing used through out the clip is continuity editing which is invisible editing. This type of editing is hard to identify as they are trying to hind the fact that the scene has been edited to create a more of a realistic atmosphere.

In the clip there is alot of transitioning between shots to create more of an awkward mood for example, at the beginning of clip there cool girl is is looking down at the boy there is a eyeline match cut from her looking at the boy then looking at the father. By using this cut it shows that the cool girl does not know whether to look at the boy or the dad this infers that she is feeling in a uncomfortable position. There is another eyeline match cut where the father of the boy is looking at the cool girl and the looks at his son. in this part of the clip there is alot of eyeline match cut because the father feels unsure of the situation and the cool girl does not what do do as she hasn't been in a position where a father has been in this type of exchange. As there is alot of eyeline match cuts if creates an award atmosphere and has emphases on the fact that the boy is disabled.

Where the father is picking up his son from the wheelchair there is a match on action to make the process of the father pick him up seem more smooth, quick and natural. This cut also helps show the continuity of seemless action. When the boy is in the bed there is a cut where the cool girl is locking the door the cut used again was a eyeline match as this cut infers his vulnerability when she is locking the door as he feels uneasy knowing his father is unable to come in at anytime to help him.

There is a cross cut transition out of the room to out side where the father is so show how he is feeling while his son is in the room by with the cool girl. This helps the audience to see that the father feels anxious of how his son is. When the clip is cross cut back to the room there is a shot reverse shot during the conversation between the cool girl and the boy and by using this cut it shows that the cool girl feels uncomfortable and this creates a tense atmosphere. When the clip cross cuts back the the out side  there is a eyeline match of the father looking up at the room which he is in as he is worried about his son.

When the father was in the car outside  there was jump cuts used to show time has come passed and this shows that the father feels restless. Then there is another cross cut back to the room to show what the cool girl and the boy is doing in the duration where the father is waiting in the car. And towards the end there is eyeline match and shot reverse shot cuts when the cool girl is looking at the boy as she is able to see that he is feeling awkward as he has not experienced what she is doing to him. All the awkwardness created emphasizes the fact that he is disabled.

Camera analysis of Monarch of the glen clip

How does shot sizes, composition and movement help construct the representation of age?

Shot size
In the clip there was a medium long shot of the young girl this shot helped the representation of her age as this shot helps establish her costume. There is also a close up shot of the young girl in the land rover by having a close up shot you are able to see her facial expressions. In this shot it shows her confusion of the use of the car so this infers that she is too young to drive or have the knowledge of driving the car. When there was a car crash the type of shot that was used was a wide shot this shot help the audience to be aware of the location and what was happening in the shot. Then there was another medium long shot used to show the costume of the headmaster and in the shot the collision was in the foreground and this helped the audience to see the differences between young and old. When the two adults where entering the office the shot used was long shot this type of shot helped the audience to see the costume, the posture and the body language of the adults. being able to see these features of the characters it helps the audience to interoperate the age of the characters. In this scene of the office there was a mid shot of the young male adult and this helped his to show his body language also. In the scene where the young girl is getting told off by the young male adult there is a medium close up of the young girl to help see her expressions and emotions on her face by being able to see her facial expressions you are you can infer her age. In the scene of the young girls room there are extreme close ups of the notes made so the audience are able to see that she is not extremely young as she is old enough to inform the adults that she is running away. In the clip there was a extreme long shot to establish the location and this  helped represent the age as it showed the location where the male adults are working.

Composition
There was an over the shoulder shot that was used in the clip where the young boy was having a conversation with the young girl and this shot was helping to represent the age as it helped show that the girl was younger than the boy. In the scene where there was a car crash there was a high angle shot this helped to establish the location. When the young girl was trying to hide away from the headmaster there was a two shot of the young girl and the young female adult; in this shot you are able to see that the young female adult if acting like a motherly figure that is trying to protect her child. This two shot helps represent the difference of age between the young female adult and young girl. another thing about this shot is that it is at eye level of the young girl so it makes the audience feel suspicious of the young girl and what is her motive. In the scene where the young male adult is telling off the young girl a low angle shot is used to show his authority so it helps represent age.

Movement
At the beginning of the clip you are able to see that the type movement that was used was a dolly shot and this allows the audience to see the tools, by the audience being able to see the tools are used for hard labour they can infer that the people using the tools would be older. At the scene of the car crash there is a pan/ tilt movement to show the height difference between the characters and from the height difference you are able to establish who is within each age range. A tilt movement is also used in the young girl room to revile the note and there was a pan movement to see important features in the room so the audience is able to what elements makes her a young girl as you are able to see the decorated mirror and the teddy bear. In this scene of the room there is a slow zoom in the picture to see that the young girl is looking back to how see felt when that picture was taken and the audience is able to compare her feelings and emotions. After the young girl has run away there was a tilt movement used showing the window ledge to the inside of the room and this makes the audience feel like they are on the outside looking in; this is how the young girl is feeling. So this helps the audience infer her age as they know how she feels and how she is feeling is how a young girl would feel in that situation.

Analysing the Mise En Scene in the "Monarch of the Glen"clip; How does it construct the representation of age?

What is mise en scene?
Mise En Scene contains the following aspects:
  • location/setting
  • costume
  • make-up
  • lighting
  • props
  • blocking
  • body language
When looking at the mise en scene in the clip you are able to see how it can have an effect the representation of age.

Location/Setting
The location of the first part of the clip is in a spacious field and this suggests that the characters like to be in a quite area with hardly any distractions. People who would prefer this type of location would seem to be in the older category of age. When part of the scene was set in an office you was able to see the office was for people who enjoyed an big quite room that was make out of wood and which had detailed designs engraved into the wood. From the design of the office you was able to see that the office was quite dated. From the office being dated you are able to seen that the office if for adults. When the setting was in the young girls room you could tell that this room was for a young girl as it was decorated with pink a decoration and girly things.

Costume
From the type of clothing you are able to distinguish what age range they are in. As you are able to see the younger characters are dressed more smart casual. You are able to see that the middle age characters are dressed in clothing that are suitable for doing hard labour work and as they are doing hard labour work it suggests that they are of an older age. For the older range of characters they are dress more smartly and this also suggest their importance and class. For example the elder lady is dressed more classy as she is wearing more sophisticated clothing, this implies that she is in an upper class. And when analysing the clothing of the headmaster you are able to see that he is in an older category as he is wearing a tweed blazer with a v-neck jumper and shirt and tie; from this you are able to see that he is stereotypically dressed as a teacher and that his fashion sense is dated.

Make up
For the young girl her make-up is quite natural as she is a young girl so they want to show that she is not wearing any make-up, where as the older lady make-up is simple yet natural so this suggests that she is older as young adults would wear make-up that is more noticeable and less natural. When looking at the older men that are the workers you are able to see that they are dirty looking and a typical working man of the middle age range would look dirty and scruffy. The headmaster's make-up involved him having a grey beard so this shows the audience that he is of an older age.

Lighting
The lighting that is used during the clip has been natural lighting as the locations of the scenes have not been in studios so it makes the atmosphere of the locations seem more dull. As the atmosphere of the location is dull if makes the audience feel that the characters that live in these locations have to be older as stereotypically older adults can be boring.

Props
Some of the props used can suggest that the age of the characters; the older men are using tools which young adults would not know how to handle and be aware of how to use the tools, this shows the age as they would have be experienced and have the strength to use the tools. The brandy in the office suggest that the office would only allow adults to enter the room and the people that are allowed to enter the room must be of an age where they are responsible and to be able to be trusted enough to be around alcohol. And the alcohol is in a decanter so this also showed the wealth of the character as the brandy was not in a bottle yet in a separate container. In the girls room there was a teddy bear, girly magazines and decorated mirror with pictures this suggests that the young girl is young by the props that are used in her room as they are the types of things a young girl would have in her room.

Blocking
In this clip you are able to seen blocking in the beginning where the young girl keeps her distance from the young male adult it shows that she is younger as she is waiting to be told what to do so this is shows that she is of a younger age to the young male adult as she is willing to obey his instructions. And blocking was used when one of the men is watching the young girl starting the car; he is keeping his distance to show that he is observing her to make sure she knows what she is doing. as he is observing her from a distance you are able to see that he is older than the young girl. Again you can see blocking when the older lady is observing the young male adult telling off the young girl, from the old lady just observing and not getting involved it shows her maturity so this suggests that she is of an older age.

Body language
You are able to the young girls age when she is unaware of her resources and is uncertain how to drive; this suggests that she is younger as she does not know how to drive. Also when she sees the head master she acts cowardly was she is aware that she is going to get caught so this show that she has done something wrong and she is trying to hide. As she has done something wrong it shows her immaturity. After she has seen the headmaster the men seem to acted shocked and angry toward the girl as they are angry the audience are able to see that the two men are older that than the young girl. When the young male adult tells the young girl off the young girl shows her and runs away in a childish manor. And the young male adult is represented as a dominant figure. Toward the end of the clip the old lady's body language seems worried and that she has maternal feeling toward the young girl. This type of body language suggests that she if in an older age range.

Key Concepts of Media Studies

The key concepts of media studies are:
  • Media language- the nuts and bnolts of media products
  • Representation - how people, especially certain groups such as age, gender, ethnicity, sexuallity, regional identify, ability/disability and class/social status, are portrayed by the media.
  • Audience- the ways of describing nad appeling to consumers of media
  • Institution- the producers and regualtors of the media
What does each of the key concepts refer to?

Media language refers to the following:
  • cinematography
  • editing
  • sound
  • mise en scene
Cinematography is the type of technique that is use in media this the way the media has been developed, which includes the types of shots that have been used to produce the media.

Editing is one of the final tasks when producing the product; when editing you are able to choos what type of transitions you would like to use and what transition would be the most effective when transtitioning from each clip. When editing you are able to rearrange the clips and input non-diegetic sounds.

Sound is split into two different catagories; diegetic and non diegetic. Diegetic sound is the sound that is within  the clip and the charactor are able to hear the sound. Whereas, non diogetic is the type of sound which can be inserted into the clip and when filing the  clip the charactors are not able to here thed sound ad it has be covererd over the clip.

Mise en Scene is everything that is in the scene this includes;
  • the setting
  • location
  • lighting
  • costume
  • make up
  • props
  • blocking
  • body language
Representation refers to the following groups
  • age
  • gender
  • ethnicity
  • sexuallity
  • regional identify
  • ability/disability
  • class/social status
These groups in the media are portrayed stereotypically to what the ceratin roles are in the society.

Institution in the media includes the producers and regulators of the media who are the people who are able to control the stucture of the product such as the creation and distribution of the media.

Audience is the consumers that are exposed to the media, depending of the type of media you have different demographic which  the media is aimed to.

How does the exam go abput testing your knowledge of each concept?

For media language you'll be tested on your ability to analyse the following:
  • cinematography
  • editing
  • sound
  • mise en scene
For representaion you'll be asked to analyse how the media lauguage bulids a represention of one of the following:
  •  age
  • gender
  • ethnicity
  • sexuallity
  • regional identify
  • ability/disability
  • class/social status
For audience and instituion you'll be tested on your knowledge of the realtionship between the people who produce distibute and exhibit the films.
